Eleven by Patricia Highsmith
Eleven by Patricia Highsmith is a collection of short stories written by the legendary writer Patricia Highsmith. This collection of stories is known for its dark masterpieces of obsession and foreboding, violence and instability. It features a gallery of bizarre characters, each driven by strange unspoken urges. The collection has been praised by Graham Greene, who wrote a foreword for the book, and is considered a classic in the psychological thriller genre.
Want Not by Jonathan Miles
Readers are telescoped into three different worlds in varying states of disrepair as the novel opens on Thanksgiving Day: a young freegan couple living off the grid in New York City; a once-prominent linguist, sacked at midlife by the breakdown of his marriage and his father’s losing battle with Alzheimer’s; and a self-made debt-collecting magnate, whose brute talent for squeezing money out of unlikely places has yielded him
Until their worlds abruptly, suddenly, and irreparably converge in a jarring conclusion that will stay with readers long after the last page is turned, these people are driven by desire and want to pursue anything and everything more.
Miles captures the chaos and humor of modern life in all its abundance with the eye of a satirist and the heart of a romantic. Want Not is a wicked, bighearted literary novel that announces the entry of an important voice in American fiction. It is unafraid, unwavering, and unforgettable in its irony and sadness.
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
The plot opens in the 1950s in a gritty, energetic area outside of Naples. The two girls learn to depend on each other more than anyone or anything else as they grow up in these rough neighborhoods.
Elena and Lila remain great friends whose individual destiny are reflected and refracted in one another as they mature and as their paths repeatedly diverge and converge. They represent a country that is going through a major shift.
My Brilliant Friend is a complex, dramatic, and kindhearted tale about two friends, Elena and Lila, written by one of Italy’s most renowned authors. A thorough portrayal of these two ladies that doubles as the history of a country and a moving reflection on the nature of friendship is well suited to Ferrante’s singular style.
The Palm Beach Murders by James Patterson
Christy and Martin, who both survived the divorce wars, do not believe in falling in love at first sight or even on a first date.
But as soon as they meet each other’s gaze, everything changes and turns into a passionate, romantic fantasy. That is, until they begin to engage in an oddly intense game of pretend, a game that is about to get out of hand.
The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand
The Hotel Nantucket went from being a gilded age jewel to a substandard budget-friendly lodge to inevitably an abandoned eyesore after a devastating fire in 1922 that killed 19-year-old chambermaid Grace Hadley, until it was bought and completely renovated by London tycoon, Xavier Darling.
In order to turn around the hotel’s fortune, Xavier employs Nantucket darling Lizbet Keaton as his general manager.
Lizbet then gathers a charismatic, if inexperienced, crew around her. They struggle to get along with one another (and with the visitors), to overcome the hotel’s negative reputation, and to survive Grace Hadley herself, who haunts the place and won’t go until her murder is admitted.
Hotel Nantucket has something for everyone in this summer drama for the ages. It is full of the emotional tension and numerous points of view that define Elin’s books (The Blue Bistro, Golden Girl), as well as an additional touch of historical realism.
