5 Books to Read for Fans of DC Movies

03 Sep 2022

If you’re a fan of DC films, there’s no shortage of comic books to expand your knowledge of the extensive DC comics lore. But, sometimes, the comics aren’t enough. After all, they just give you more of the same, and, in some cases, the same stories you have already watched in the movies.

If you’re looking for something new to fulfill your longing for DC movies before Black Adam finally releases this October, here are five books you should check out:

Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman

Missing the Justice League? If so, reading this book will make for a fantastic experience of following a group of superheroes out to fight evil together.

Soon I Will Be Invincible is a comedy adventure that follows the Champions, a superhero group that is bored of having to deal with the same villains over and over again. However, they will have to join forces once more after their arch nemesis breaks out of prison again.

While not as dark as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Soon I Will Be Invincible is just as entertaining. Think of it as Justice League told from Shazam’s perspective.

Renegades by Marissa Mayer

While Watchmen may not be part of the DC Extended Universe, Zack Snyder’s 3-hour opus is still one of DC’s most popular films. If you love Watchmen, you’re bound to enjoy Renegades by Marissa Mayer.

Renegades is a dystopian tale where the heroes, a group by the name of Renegades, are not as squeaky clean as they are supposed to be. The protagonist of the novel is an orphaned girl who is sent to infiltrate the Renegades by a group of villains.

It’s a dark, thrilling story that will have you turning the pages in anticipation of more great action.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

A scientific experiment gone wrong is a fairly common trope in superhero comics and movies, and Vicious by V.E. Schwab takes that somewhere darker. It’s a story about two college students who work together to make an incredible discovery. However, what they discover is, as you guessed, quite dangerous and leaves both of them with special powers.

However, it’s their human nature that dominates the two new potential superheroes, and they find themselves in bitter conflict years into the future. In short, Vicious provides a look at why special abilities can easily be a curse.

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardrugo

Comic book novelizations don’t always work out. However, Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardrugo is a fantastic exception to that rule. The captivating book features DC superhero Wonder Woman and Alia Keralis, a descendant of Helen of Troy.

With its two fantastic female leads, Warbringer makes for an incredible book that will leave you wanting more. It’s as good as comic novelizations can get, and is a must-read for any Wonder Woman fans.

The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay by Michael Chabon

This book isn’t about superheroes as much as it’s about the people who create our favorite superheroes. The titular characters Cavalier and Klay are comic book writers who create The Escapist; a character best described as a cross between Superman and Houdini.

Chabon’s book relates the tale of the two writers as they try to get their idea off the ground and make The Escapist a household name. It’s funny, warm, and a very good read that will leave you wanting more.
