Anatomy of a Blockbuster Story: Sex And The City

29 Jul 2020

In 1996, Candace Bushnell released Sex and the City and love in New York City was never the same. Consisting of writing done by Bushnell published in The New York Observer, the book explored the many ups and downs of sex and romance in the Big Apple, much stemming from Bushnell’s own experiences.

Since then, the book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and remains a big hit, having been spun into a hit television series, two feature films, a musical and a continuous reference to love of a prior era. Check out the list below to see the impact the ladies of Sex and the City have had in the world, from reading to bigger screens!

1. TV Series – Sex and the City (1998-2004)

In its six year run, Sex and the City received 7 Emmys, among a hundred other accolades. Following the stories of protagonist Carrie and her three closest friends, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, the show became a worldwide phenomenon, praised (and critiqued by some) for its honest portrayal of topics including feminism, sexuality, and love.

The show’s popularity influenced modern-day culture all over the globe, as fans began to imitate the character’s habits, including an increase in the sales and drinking of the girl’s favorite drink, cosmopolitans.

2. Feature Films – Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010)

After the tv series concluded in 2004, fans still wanted more from their favorite New York ladies. In 2008, A Sex and the City feature film was released, becoming a box office hit with over $400 million box-office in profit. A sequel was released in 2010, to a $200 million box-office profit — less than its predecessor, but still a major crowd-pleaser.

The sequel partly took took place in The Middle East, branching out from the usual playground of New York City. A third film was rumored to have been in the works but remains unannounced.

3. Musical – Sex N’ the City: A Super Unauthorized Musical Paraody (2019-Present)

The most current rendition of The Sex and the City franchise is the modern-day musical parody (unauthorized, that is). Asking the same questions Carrie asked in the show (“Will I ever find the one?), the musical follows the beloved characters of the tv series, both poking fun at and simultaneously celebrating the series.

Old fans will love it and new fans will want to delve into the writing, reading and filming of the life that is Carrie and the gals’. The musical plans to continue touring starting next year!

4. Merch – Sex and the City games and fun

No hit show would be complete without some sweet merchandise. Fortunately, all sorts of memorabilia from Sex and the City exist and are still available! Fans who want to add a fun spark to their drinking of the flavorful cosmo can pick up Charlotte’s martini glass.

Those who feel confident in their knowledge of all things Sex and the City can try their hand at trivia, and those who couldn’t get enough of the chic style of the girls will have fun trying some of the show’s lingerie.

Though the Sex and the City story is over 20 years-old, the spirit of the story remains ever-present, as the questions of romance and sex never go out of style.
